What Gets Easier and What Gets Harder for James McCormick
In Chapter 1 of 18 in his 2012 Capture Your Flag interview, legal career advisor James McCormick shares the news of having a child since his Year 2 interview and the new challenges (and rewards) that come with being a parent. Additionally, he notes his promotion to partner at his job and the positives that come with the challenges of transitioning from employee to owner at the firm. James McCormick is a Partner at Empire Search Partners in New York City.
Erik: What is getting easier and what is getting harder in your life? James: Wow. Well, since our last interview, my son was born, Jack, he’s 14 months. That presents a remarkable amount of challenges on a daily basis. It’s hard to really describe where it becomes a pleasure and where it’s a challenge. But I would tell you that that would be the first thing that I would point to on an everyday basis. Whether it’s having toast in the morning or it’s making sure that you’re home on Fridays in time to see him before he goes to bed, but without question, biggest challenge and biggest reward on a daily basis. Beyond Jack, I would also point to sort of elevated position at my job, I’ve been promoted to partner. With that has come a lot of personal pride and so far as I’ve sort of reached a level that I’ve really wanted to reach. And at the same time, the challenge that comes along with the additional responsibilities of the role, you know kind of moving from an employee to an owner, adjusting to that sort of new style, new challenges, new sort of rewards that comes with that positioning over just being an employee.
