Audra Lowe: Well, what would your best job be? More magazine decided to find out what the 10 best jobs would be, for women over 40 with the help of the poling company. In today's More Talk I sat down with editor Jenn Braunschweiger who tells us it's not just about the salary or the benefits. So Jenn, you guys pulled just over a 500 women for this survey, correct?
Jenn Braunschweiger: That's right we did an exclusive nation wide telephone survey of women between the ages of 40-59, and we ask them what makes a job great, what do you are looking for in a job, because before we came up with our list of jobs, we wanted to make sure that we were really addressing the needs of midlife women.
Audra Lowe: One of things that you notice was at the top of the list was it that the job had to be meaningful?
Jenn Braunschweiger: That's right I think women who are in their 40s-50s have maybe been working for 25-30 years and now their priority we hear this across the board their priority is feeling like they are giving back looking for a real sense of personal satisfaction, and meaning in their jobs. So that's a by far in a way the most important quality in a job for midlife women.
Audra Lowe: Okay some interesting jobs that made the list here at number 10 in the magazine was the small scale niche farmer. I never would have thought about that, why is that so big?
Jenn Braunschweiger: Well, some of the other qualities that women were looking for were flexibility, autonomy, they didn't want somebody telling them what they were going to do all the time. Small scale niche farmer combines a lot of these qualities, you really, you are running your own business, it's a great lifestyle, you are outside. One of the women we talk to who was a farmer, she raises arugula and other vegetables. She said she would sit at her job and look out the window and think I could be outside and so she really changed her life in a way that gives her a huge amount of personal satisfaction and -
Audra Lowe: And it works, and not bad money the top 10% make almost a $100,000 right.
Jenn Braunschweiger: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: Okay, also number seven on the list which I think a lot of women would be a great at strategic and crisis communication professional --
Jenn Braunschweiger: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: Handling a bunch right now.
Jenn Braunschweiger: This job fascinates me, because it's a job that really didn't exist five years ago. The new schedule has changed so rapidly, the technology has changed so rapidly. So this is a job where you help companies manage their reputations whether with their Facebook pages, or their Twitter accounts or everything else. And this is something that the women we talk to, who do this said, you have to be a midlife women to do that. You can't come right out of college, you don't have the life experience, so it's job that's very adrenaline based, you have to really be ready to go. It's not a job for somebody with small children, another thing that many midlife women their kids are out of the house. And one thing we hear about midlife women profession is sometimes they are finding that they are ambition is waking up again, and for a long time they were raising small kids and now they are ready to go.
Audra Lowe: Exactly, okay number three on the list environmental scientist and of the top 10% make over a $100,000 in this field as well.
Jenn Braunschweiger: Sure, money is obviously something that midlife women want and need. They have a lot of demands on them financially, so that's good for that environmental scientist you can make some money. And again this is really a bit of a lifestyle job where you are outside in the field, and giving back to the world and to the community.
Audra Lowe: And we have to mention the number one job that made the list was the community service coordinator or manager, why that job?
Jenn Braunschweiger: Off the charts in terms of meaning, this is a job that you can do in any number of ways, but at its core, it's about helping people and it's about finding resources for people in need. So midlife women really respond to that and do well.
Audra Lowe: You guys did a great job over there, thank you so much Jenn I appreciate it.
Jenn Braunschweiger: Thank you very much.
Audra Lowe: And for more information about the best midlife jobs you can pick up the November copy of More magazine which is on news stand now.
