HEADLINE: Employers add 163K jobs, unemployment at 8.3% --------------------------------------- CAPTION: U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July, a hopeful sign after three months of sluggish hiring. (Aug. 3) ----------------------------------------[Location - Date:] [Source:] [VO:][VOICE-OVER] TRACK#1 THE UNEMPLOYMENT LATE ROSE LAST MONTH BY 1/10 OF 1% TO 8.3% WHILE HUNDRED AND 63,000 JOBS WERE CREATED. THAT'S BETTER THAN ECONOMISTS WERE EXPECTING AND THE STRONGER SHOWING SINCE FEBRUARY.Joanie Ruge, Randstad Corporation "That number is going to hover somewhere around that 8.1 to 8.3 percent until we start to see some big consistent job growth on a monthly basis. Probably more like 200 to 300,000 jobs a month for quite a few months in a row."THE INCREASE IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT USES TWO SURVEYS: THE ONE THAT TRACKS BUSINESSES SHOWED GAINS, BUT A SURVEY OF HOUSEHOLDS SHOWED A LOSS OF 195,000 JOBS. THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WELCOMED THE REPORT, BUT ACKNOWLEDED THAT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO GET PEOPLE BACK TO WORK.[Notes:Hilda Solis, Labor Secretary]"The numbers are much improved from the last report but we know we still have a long ways to go. They're still too many people looking for jobs and were not going to stop helping the situation until everyone needs a job finds one."THE ECONOMY HAS ADDED AN AVERAGE OF 151,000 JOBS A MONTH THIS YEAR, ROUGHLY THE SAME AS LAST YEAR'S PACE. BUT THAT'S NOT ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE 12.8 MILLION AMERICANS WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED. [Notes:SOUNDBITE (English) Delvorine Robateau, Chicago, Illinois] "I have no income at this time. And I've been unemployed for the last year and a half, about 18 months now. I do babysitting as a job, and I can't find a job. I'm out of energy right now. I think because a lot of places closes down. You know, I guess it's the economy."[Notes:SOUNDBITE (English) Markus King, Chicago, Illinois] "The last few months that I've been looking, I've been optimistic, I'm just trying to stay positive. Don't think nothing negative. Because then it will discourage you from looking for a job and trying to find employment."HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT COULD HURT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA'S RE-ELECTION HOPES. [Notes:SOT President Barack Obama]""This morning, we learned that our businesses created 172 thousand new jobs in the month of July. That's means that we've now created four point-five million in the last 29 months, and one -point-one million new jobs this year. Those are our neighbors and family members finding work, and the security that comes with work. But, let's acknowledge, we've still got too many folks out there who are looking for work. We've got more work to do on their behalf. Not only to reclaim all the jobs that were lost during the recession, but also to reclaim that kind of financial security that too many Americans felt was slipping away from them for too long." MITT ROMNEY, CAMPAIGNING IN LAS VEGAS SEIZED ON THE REPORT CALLING IT AN [Notes:SOT: Mitt Romney,Massachuesttes governor]"of course today we just got a new number from the unemployment report and it's another hammer blow to the struggling middle-class families of America. Because the president has not kept policies that put American families back to work. I do I'll put them in place and get America working again."GERRY BODLANDER, ASSOCIATED PRESS[SIGOUT/REPORTER, LOCATION, ASSOCIATED PRESS] (****END****) ANCHOR VOICE: ------------------------- VIDEO PRODUCER: --------------------------- VIDEO SOURCE: ----------------------- VIDEO APPROVAL: ---------------------------- VIDEO RESTRICTIONS: ---------------------------------- MARKET EMBARGO (S): -------------------------------- SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:
